Bancall is an interactive bench that brings joy and community to the city through movements.
It is designed for Vitry-sur-seine's urbain developement project "Les Ardoines".
The project is inspired by the seine. As a part of the city's name, the seine river played a big part of the citizen's life. People’s activity revolved around the seine. They would jog along the river, have parties by the quai, and even fishing by the seine.
We noticed how, river, or flowing water, can bring movement to our life, just as it brought movement to the nature. The idea of river naturally leads people to think about a rhythmatic movement like floating or moving back and forth.
So we wanted to bring this movement of the water to the land. We focused on the movement of floating, as it creates most fun through a tad bit if unpredictability.
After experimenting with the movement through sketches, models and prototypes, we finally linked “floating”(in water) with “balancing”(can be achieved on land), and simplified the form to a minimal structure.
